Renewing an LEI under EU reporting rules

In the EU an out-of-date LEI is more than a reminder email. Under EMIR Refit, trade repositories validate the reporting counterparty's LEI status. Brokers covered by MiFIR check their clients' LEIs before execution. A LAPSED status can stop a derivative report or a trade at the worst possible moment.

Renewing re-certifies the record against your national business register for another twelve months. The code is unchanged, and so are the existing reports and onboarding records that reference it. If the company moved its registered office, changed its name or joined a new group during the year, the renewal is when the LEI record is brought into line.

Before you renew

  • Compare the LEI record with the current CRO, MBR or national register entry
  • Update parent relationships after acquisitions or reorganisations
  • For funds, check that closed or merged sub-funds are retired rather than renewed

EU LEI renewal questions

Will an expired LEI stop our EMIR reports?

It can. Under the updated EMIR validation rules the reporting counterparty's LEI must be current, so reports can be rejected while it is LAPSED. Renewing restores ISSUED status, normally within a working day.

We manage several funds. Can we renew them together?

Yes. Use a bulk renewal so all fund and sub-fund LEIs fall on the same renewal cycle.

The LEI was issued by another provider. Can we renew it here?

Yes. Start a transfer and the renewal is included. The code stays the same.
